Probably the single one second in time that has led to my greatest freedom was the day I managed to go to bed with a dish in the sink and forgave myself for it.

I've ideas for games and a few challenges.
I challenge each of you - either here or in your journal - to acknowledge steps you are taking to improve your life. Small little decisions, choices and activities that you do that are good for you. We so often focus on the things we don't get done that we don't celebrate the things we do every day that are terrific. So - will you get to work on time this week? make a healthy meal? do a single one of your chores? go to bed on time? compliment someone? do something thoughtful? take a long hot bath? look at something from a new perspective? skipped some "bad for you" food? walked a few flight of stairs? prayed? loved? Small victories are still victories. Big goals are accomplished in little steps. And it is about time we celebrated each of those accomplishments or at least allowed ourselves time to be happy with what we have done instead of what we haven't managed to finish.... yet. Now back to the task at hand.
Most of us feel calmer when our environment is clean and orderly. We feel more tranquil when we are all caught up with tasks and have met all our obligations. Our minds settle when we interact with nature. We enjoy being able to take time out for ourselves. So why didn't I pick cleaning the house, camping or getting a massage as the first challenge? Time and energy If we had enough time and energy to clean the house, pay the bills, take care of our friends, spoil ourselves, invest time in our bliss etc. - we would already be doing it. So I looked over my outline of "things that would exist in my world if it were perfect" (it is a very cool document) and chose something basic. To feel truly serene I need to become healthy physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I need to feel that I have the power to control and make changes in my life. I chose to start with the physical as it is the most basic and easiest to address. I also wanted to find something that wasn't a major time investment and was not reliant on other people. So I didn't want to make a big challenge - like only eat natural foods, throw out all the HFCS in the house, do thirty minutes of cardio a day, buy only from your local farmer's market and then maintain a 1500 calorie diet balanced perfectly within the food groups etc. That isn't realistic. More importantly it isn't fun. So here is the challenge - Say no to one small thing or exchange something that you know isn't good for you. Or say yes to something that is. Maybe go walk slowly for 90 minutes over the week, do a little extra housework or spend a few minutes stretching each day Or better yet just have an extra hour worth of great sex. Something small not just to prove that we are in control of our lives but to also bring awareness to choices that we make unthinkingly. Serenity is directly related to balance. It is important to find that balance and to not view keeping that balance as an act of depriving ourselves. Equally meaningful is the opportunity to see where we throw ourselves out of balance by making poor choices out of habit. I figure along with the regular games during the week we can check in and see what thoughts, insights or problem spots people have encountered. Perhaps someone else has looked at things differently and found a very cool perspective to share Okay - here is another game.
In the last one we got to stretch our imagination for a visual clue to help capture a feeling. This time I wanted to find physical and earthy practical things that help bring about a similar sensation. For me that is having all the laundry (clothes, linens, etc.) finished at the same time. I hate laundry and it is my least favorite chore. It is hard and hot and dull and horrible in every sense. Not only that but there is always more to do. On days where I don't really need to be dressed and I can get every piece done and put up I feel like I finally caught up with the universe and my brain/heart feels like it is okay to relax. What about yours?
There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.--Edith Wharton
Once upon a time -
i wrote the following: Stood in front of a full length mirror in shorts. Classic dumb girl mistake. Contemplate sawing off inner thigh cellulite but opt to hide from the scary mirror instead. Movie popcorn always upsets my stomach. I eat it anyway. Discovered that creamy creations 1905 vanilla cures it. damn, now I want more ice cream. Endeavor to remember horror of full length mirror. Memory of thighs make me queasy and conquers ice cream craving. I want Gilmore Girls back on tv. Also - want Parker Lewis Can't Lose back on air but am afraid that it won't be anywhere near as cool as I remember it. Nigh unto 400 turns and I cannot find spooky-gro fertilizer. Considering its existence a myth. (back from my WoW days) My iTunes has 6.6 days stored in the library. They are all podcasts. I blame Radio Free Burrito for this. (just back in the olde tymes days) I can't seem to get into the bathtub on schedule. Veronica Mars and Anne Hathaway's character use the same phone I have. Somehow I feel cooler because of this. And now..... bed time |
